As outdoor enthusiasts exploring Africa’s rugged terrains, we found a problem: Every AirTag case we tested either broke, didn’t quite fit or lacked the waterproofing essential for our journeys.

This led to a pile of discarded cases, contributing to the plastic waste issue we’re trying to avoid.

Our gear was left vulnerable, from our backpacks to our bikes and even our pets.

Our commitment to reducing plastic waste led us on a quest to find a sustainable solution.

Crafting the Ultimate Airtag Case

In 2023, Horizen emerged to create the ultimate Airtag case for adventurers in the rugged outdoors. These cases weren’t just about functionality; they also needed to be sustainable. Here’s how we did it.

Local Production: Reducing Carbon Footprint and Supporting Local Producers

We recognized the environmental impact of traditional manufacturing processes. We couldn’t ignore the carbon footprint of international transport, the escalating plastic waste crisis, and the adverse effects of mass production on workers. Our solution was clear: make our Airtag cases locally in South Africa. By doing so, we reduced our carbon emissions, supported local producers, and ensured fair treatment throughout our supply chain.

Crafting with Purpose: Horizen’s Sustainability Mission

To address the plastic waste problem, we explored using recycled plastic for our cases. While traditional methods like plastic injection moulding seemed promising, they didn’t align with our startup ethos.

Sustainability Challenge of 3D Printing

3D Printing offers a cost-effective, localised solution with reduced material waste. However, the use of virgin plastic posed a challenge. Recycling plastic uses 90% less energy than virgin plastic. Recycling plastic bottles into 3D printing filament sounded ideal, but creating durable products proved challenging.

From Waste to Worth: How We Recycle 3D Filament Plastic

To overcome this challenge, we implemented a 3D filament recycling program. We sort our scraps by brand, type, and colour, maintaining the integrity of the plastic filament and transforming filament scraps into recycled filament for our products. This minimises waste and transportation emissions. When you’re done with your case, you can send it back to us for recycling.

Quality Assurance: Durability Testing and Performance

Our Airtag cases are designed to last. Each undergoes rigorous drop tests, meeting military standards for durability. Water-resistant models have a waterproof seal, protecting your Airtag from submersion. Despite 3D printing’s reputation for being slow and costly, our strategic partnerships allow us to scale production affordably without sacrificing quality.
