RoamFree Pet GPS Tracker: Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is RoamFree, and how is it different from other pet trackers?
A: A GPS tracker for dogs and cats that sleeps while your pet is home and wakes the moment they leave. Most trackers run all the time and need charging every few days. RoamFree learns your home Wi-Fi and the area around your house, rests while your pet is there, and is close to full on the day they actually go.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: R1,699 once-off. Your first year of connectivity is included, with unlimited WhatsApp alerts. After 12 months, R20/month keeps it connected, and your alerts keep coming as push notifications — or R99/month on Connected if you want them on WhatsApp.
Q: Is there a subscription or contract?
A: No mandatory subscription and no contract. The tracking platform is free for life. The only running cost is connectivity — included for year one, then R20/month. Cancel any time.
Q: Do I need to buy a SIM or do RICA?
A: No. RoamFree arrives pre-configured on the Vodacom NB-IoT network. No SIM to source, no RICA, no airtime to top up.
Q: What do I need to use it?
A: Home Wi-Fi and a phone or PC with a web browser. It runs in your browser and installs to your home screen — no App Store download.
Q: How long does the battery last?
A: It depends on how much your pet goes out. A homebody who rarely leaves the yard: up to three weeks. A pet out an hour or two a day: one to two weeks. An all-day roamer: a few days. You get a low-battery alert at about 30%, and it charges from empty in about two hours with the magnetic cable.
Q: How long will it track once my pet leaves?
A: About 17 hours of tracking on the move, at a location every 60 seconds. The clock only runs while they’re moving — a pet lying low isn’t draining it.
Q: Is it suitable for cats and small pets?
A: Yes. It’s 35g and matchbox-sized. For cats and smaller animals with a neck under 30cm, fit it to a harness rather than a collar. The recommended minimum pet weight is about 2.2kg — with a light harness, the combined weight is around 65g, which keeps it under 3% of your pet’s body weight.
Q: How does it attach?
A: It sits in a flexible silicone case that fits most collars and harnesses — best on straps 20mm and wider. Tapered loops, no rings, no dangling parts. Collar for dogs and bigger pets; harness for smaller ones.
Q: Is it waterproof?
A: Yes — IP68, submersible to 1.5m. Rain, rivers and pools are fine. Works from −20°C to 60°C.
Q: How often does it update, and how accurate is it?
A: Every 60 seconds while your pet is moving outside home, to about 5m in open sky. When your pet stops, it tells you, holds the last location, and doesn’t report again until they move — using almost no battery while they’re still.
Q: Where does it work? What about rural areas?
A: Anywhere with Vodacom NB-IoT coverage — built to reach further into rural and low-signal areas than ordinary 4G. If your pet goes out of coverage, RoamFree stores its positions and sends them when it’s back in range. Check coverage where you live on the Vodacom coverage map (select “IoT”).
Q: What alerts will I get?
A: Left home, back home, moving while away, low battery, and the finder button being pressed — as push notifications on your phone, or on WhatsApp if you prefer.
Q: Can my family get the alerts too?
A: Yes. Add an emergency contact in Device Settings — they get your finder alerts on WhatsApp, plus your left home and back home alerts if you choose All. You can also share a temporary tracking link with anyone helping search; it opens in any browser, no account needed.
Q: What if someone finds my pet?
A: They hold the button on the tracker for five seconds, and it sends its exact location to you and your emergency contact. They don’t need your number, an app, or to know what it is.
Q: How long does setup take?
A: Under five minutes. Register with the Device ID (on the box and the device), log in, switch it on and take it outside for its first position. Then hold the SOS button outside, as close to your Wi-Fi router as you can, so it learns home, and charge it. The app walks you through each step. Full guide: horizen.co.za/roamfree-qsg
Q: Can I track more than one pet?
A: Yes — unlimited pets on one account. Each pet needs its own tracker.
Q: How is it different from an AirTag or a Bluetooth tag?
A: A Bluetooth tag relies on passing phones to report where it is — great in a busy suburb, thin cover on a farm road. RoamFree has its own cellular connection and reports its own location. Many households use both: a tag for the house and the block, RoamFree for everything past it.
Q: Where can I buy it, and how fast is delivery?
A: At horizen.co.za — 1–3 days nationwide, next day in Gauteng and Mpumalanga — and on Takealot, where delivery times vary.
Q: What’s the warranty and returns policy?
A: You can return it for a refund within 30 days, and it’s covered by a 12-month warranty against defects. Support is local, on WhatsApp — an answer straight away, and a real person usually within an hour or two in business hours. Full details: horizen.co.za/returns-policy
